Temperament
The Affenpinscher has a terrier-like personality. Unlike most terriers, Affenpinschers tend to get along with other dogs and pets especially when they are raised with them. Affenpinschers are busy, bold, inquisitive and stubborn, but they also love to monkey around, being playful and mischievous. The Affenpinscher is a lively sharp-witted, little dog that is courageous and confident. A fearless defender, the Affenpinscher is an authoritarian. It is very affectionate and amusing. This friendly little dog enjoys being with its family. It needs consistent, firm training. Make sure there is some variety in the training so the dog does not become bored. They learn commands very quickly. Some however, may be difficult to housebreak. They are not recommended for very young children, as Affenpinschers tend to guard their resources such as food and toys. They like to hike and go camping as long as the temperature stays above 20 degrees F. The Affenpinscher is generally quiet but can become vehemently excited when threatened or attacked and is fearless towards aggressors. It may unwisely challenge large dogs and other large animals so do make sure you keep an eye out for your Affenpinscher when outdoors. This little dog tends to bark and climb and does best with a family who likes entertainment and has a very good sense of humor.
Living Conditions
The Affenpinscher is good for apartment life. Affenpinschers are very active indoors and will do okay without a yard. Affenpinschers are sensitive to temperature extremes. Overly warm living conditions are potentially damaging to their coat.
Upkeep
Although Affenpinschers are energetic and active dogs, the exercise needs of the Affenpinscher can be met with vigorous indoor games or romps in the yard, or with short walks on leash. Affenpinscher enjoys playing outside, but it cannot live outdoors. Do make sure your Affenpinscher gets enough exercise daily to prevent it from misbehaving due to its energetic nature. The Affenpinscher’s harsh coat needs combing two or three times weekly, plus shaping every three months. Shaping for pets is by clipping, whereas show dogs require stripping.
