Temperament
Afghan Hound is dignified, somewhat aloof, but very sweet, loyal, affectionate and sensitive, with a low dominance level. Afghan Hounds must be trained kindly. The Afghan Hound has been described as “a king of dogs”. Majestic, elegant, noble and courageous, suspicious of, but not hostile to, strangers. Although tough, they will pine if they are deprived of attention. They will do best with older, considerate children. At one time, the breed had a reputation for being untrustworthy, but has now been replaced by a character that, while still spirited, is said to be more amenable to training and discipline, as they can be disobedient if it is poorly trained. This breed can be difficult to housebreak as some Afghan Hounds are timid and high strung. However, Afghan Hounds are stubborn and notorious for not listening to commands so it is best not to let them roam around off a leash even if they are well trained.
Living Conditions
The Afghan Hound is not recommended for apartment life because of the large amount of exercise needed. Afghan Hounds are relatively inactive indoors and do better with a large area to roam. Afghan Hounds can live in or outdoors, although it would be happier sleeping indoors. Afghan hounds however, if brought out for daily exercise and groomed daily. Its nature will make it a good dog for apartment living.
Upkeep
The Afghan Hound needs daily exercise, either in the form of a long walk followed by a short sprint, or preferably, a chance to run full speed in a safe, enclosed area. Although Afghan Hound’s coat might make it amenable to outdoor living in temperate areas, it needs a soft bed and is better suited as a house dog. The coat requires some commitment, especially when shedding the puppy coat; most adult coats require brushing or combing every days, to prevent matting and an unsightly coat of fur.
